Our Story

The AuthorHouse Story

Based in Bloomington, Ind., AuthorHouse® exists to help authors achieve success – by their own definition. The company was founded in 1997 by an aspiring author who saw a need for a simple and effective self-publishing process. With more than 27,000 books in print, AuthorHouse is the world’s leading author services provider, offering a range of publishing and marketing services for authors.

A Start-up Success Story
Since its inception nine years ago, AuthorHouse has consistently enjoyed year-over-year growth and success. From the publication of its first title in June 1997, through December 31, 2001, the company printed and sold a total of more than 350,000 books. The breakthrough was in 2002 when over 650,000 books were printed and sold, doubling 2001's total. The company reached a milestone in early December 2002, with the printing of its one-millionth book.  Since 2002, AuthorHouse has printed more than one million books each year.

With increased visibility, the company continues to receive an ever-increasing number of manuscripts from authors who recognize the merits of publishing with AuthorHouse.

Marketplace
AuthorHouse resides in a state-of-the art facility in Bloomington, Ind., where, in addition to sales and marketing, the company houses a fulfillment and promotional services staff.

Commitment to Authors
AuthorHouse provides a comprehensive range of publishing and promotional services including design, production, distribution and marketing. Every book receives worldwide distribution through Ingram Book Group's network of over 25,000 book stores and via the Internet at Amazon.com, Barnes&Noble.com, and the AuthorHouse online store. Books are printed using the latest print-on-demand (POD) technology offered by Ingram’s subsidiary, Lightning Source. Because POD books are generated one at a time, they neatly sidestep the high costs traditionally associated with bringing new books to the marketplace. However, in instances where off-set print runs are more logical, AuthorHouse has infrastructure in place to support this method.

Personal Support and Guidance
With 175 employees, including a full-time promotions staff and design team, AuthorHouse is committed to providing the highest level of customer service in publishing. Each author is assigned an experienced team of author advocates. Hours are spent guiding each author through the publishing process. AuthorHouse also provides a broad array of tools and services to allow authors to make their own choices throughout the publishing experience.

New Levels of Author Control
Setting new standards in publishing, AuthorHouse empowers its authors with the ability to set their own royalty rate. Authors can choose royalties from 5 to 15 percent on retail sales and between 10 and 50 percent on direct sales through the AuthorHouse Web site. This unique sliding scale gives them direct influence and increased control over the final pricing of their individual books. AuthorHouse authors decide whether to opt for a greater royalty and higher book price or a lower royalty and less expensive book price.  As with the entire AuthorHouse experience, choice always remains with the author.
