It had been raining and the light was beginning to fail
behind the sad looking deciduous trees whose aging leaves were deserting
them. The impression was one of
brownness, of dourness, of cold. Out of
the corner of my eye I saw a figure, small and naked. Falling.
Falling from the muddy river bank.
What must have been a split second shot.
Very white skin, almost torpedo shaped body, stubby feet seemingly
clamped together at the ankle and arms raised high above the dome-like,
hairless head. Not a graceful pose, more
like a child’s drawing of a fat balle
rina.
But instantly recognisable. I
knew she would be here. Those reluctant
links between us were impossible to break.
My automatic reaction was to run, run towards her, and as the wooden bridge rattled beneath my clumsy feet – I’m no athlete and quickly found exhalation almost impossible – I swear our eyes met. Then she was just swallowed up by the river. Moss on the damp ground made me slip a little, but I was determined to get to her. There was a moment as I managed to pick up speed when she appeared to bob up to the surface. Nature is a wonderful thing isn’t it? Nature, I thought, would help me save her. Reaching the water’s edge – even now I don’t know how long it took – I was sure I could still see circular swirls of grey water, like a target, where she was. And bubbles.

About the Author
Kerry Hadley has written fiction for as long as she can remember. She has been fortunate enough to have indulged her interests by completing a degree in English and Literary Studies and a further degree in Psychology. Having worked as a secondary school teacher since 1999, Kerry's particular interest has been English Language. She lives with her family in the West Midlands, UK. The Chameleon Room is her first novel.
