ACT 1 Scene 1 A Doctor in a white coat sitting at his desk, busy working on some papers. The desk has a phone sitting on it. There is no other furniture in the room. A crisp and neat Man dressed in a white suit, white shirt, white socks, white tie and white shoes, knocks on the door on right of stage. The Doctor asks the Man to come in without looking up from his papers. The Man duly walks in, closes the door behind him and stands in front of the desk, and moves very little. [The Man is expressionless at all times] Doctor: (without looking up) Hello, why don't you take a seat? Man: Good morning doctor, I prefer to stand, thank you. Can you help me? Doctor: Good morning. Well, I am quite sure I can. (looks up at the Man) But surely, you are too healthy to be ill? Man: I know. But you see, illness is all in the mind. Doctor: That is very true. You are a very intelligent person sir. (gets up to examine the Man) Man: You mistake me. I mean to say that I am mad. Doctor: (sits back down, startled) Sorry, I don't think I got you. Man: You did doctor, your startled expression reveals the fact that you heard me clearly, but you do not want to take what I said into account. Since you insist, I shall repeat myself. I am insane. Doctor: No, of course not. I mean, of course. I mean…well, if there is a problem then I will most definitely do my part to help. Man: Excellent doctor. Then could you please refer me to the mental institute on top of the hill? Doctor: (becoming serious and suspicious) That is not a madhouse sir, it is a place of refuge for people who have special thinking patterns and thoughts. It isn't called Sanctuary lightly. Man: Of course it is not doctor. It is salvation, a God in a Godless world. Is that not what is said about it? Doctor: I don't quite follow. (returning to his papers) Anyway, you are perfectly healthy. Man: I know that doctor, and I am reassured by you not having checked me. However, you are overlooking the fact that I have no physical illness. The imperfection of my human form lies in my head. I am abnormal. Doctor: (dismissing the Man) Sir, you are a perfectly healthy person. Man: But I know that. Doctor: (looks up at the Man quizzically and frowns) Then I don't quite understand why you have come in to see me. Formats Book Details
The Deliverance of Sanctuary Ikhtisad Ahmed was born to Ishtiaq and Safina Ahmed (daughter of legendary Bangladeshi poet and distinguished intellectual Mahbub ul Alam Chowdhury and Jowshan Ara Rahman) on 13 October 1984. Although born in Singapore, he was brought up in his homeland, Bangladesh. He studied law at undergraduate and various postgraduate levels (LLB, LLM and BVC) in England from 2003 to 2009, being called to the Bar in 2010 by the Honourable Society of Inner Temple. He currently resides in London, working in the field of alternate dispute resolution at RJ Global Consultants, as well as being an associate at the reputed Bangladeshi law firm Akhtar Imam and Associates. He has also helped establish a development organisation by the name of Shimanto (registered in Bangladesh) in 2009. It is founded on the principles of human rights-based approaches to poverty and development, and seeks to work in the fields of law and education in relation to such approaches in developing countries. Additionally, Ikhtisad is a driven and an ambitious individual who is an aspiring writer in his spare time. He writes both legal articles (several published internationally in renowned journals) and literary pieces (a book of poems titled Cryptic Verses, published by Palok Publishers Bangladesh, his first publication, and a play titled The Deliverance of Sanctuary, published by Authorhouse UK, his second).
