The book begins with a ‘A Night to Remember’, this is the true story of an attack upon Alison Sharman, a 20 year old young mother pushing her 10 week old daughter through the street of Halifax, England on a cold winters evening.  It explains the circumstances of the attack and how the young mum fought back to preserve the life of her and her young baby.

 

The story incorporates how she was treated by the local Police and because she never saw the attackers face how she feared he would be coming after her and how Alison fought back by deciding to join the local Police and eventually chose the career path of being a Detective.

 

Due to Alison’s experience as a Karate expert and being a detective she designed a course for women around Self Defence Techniques and complete protection Awareness, ‘The Art Of Self Belief’ based on her own life experience and how she chose to fight back.

 

The first chapter covers basic awareness when in your home or in the street or travelling in your car. The book moves on to explain the current law in England in relation to Self Defence and how far people are actually allowed to go to protect themselves if they are subject to an attack.

 

The next chapter is based on forensic awareness and what to do and what to expect if we are attacked and how we can preserve all forensic evidence to assist the Investigating officers.

 

The final chapter covers 26 basic self defence techniques from punching to elbow strikes to arm locks, knife attacks and take downs.

 

The conclusion explains how a man was arrested and served 15 years for an attack on a young women in Halifax.

 

Alison Sharman is a 2nd Dan black belt in Bushido Ryu which is a style of Karate that incorporates jujitsu, judo and Thai boxing.

 

Alison has trained in Martial Arts since the age of seven and in 1984 at the age of  17 Alison won her first National title at the English Open Cup.

 

The following year Alison achieved her Black belt in the sport and went on to win the British Championships in Crystal Palace, London.

 

Alison won several National titles over the next few years and represented England in the World Open Cup in Helsinki in 1988 and 1989 finishing in the semi finals and finals respectively.

 

In 1992 Alison became the British Police Karate Champion, a title which she held for 5 years prior to retiring from competition in 1998.

 

During this time Alison regularly instructed both men and women in Martial Arts and went on to specialise in teaching both men and women at Self Defence incorporating many techniques from each of the Arts and also qualifying as a Police Self Defence Instructor.

 

In 1987 Alison gave birth to her daughter Michelle and when Michelle was 10 weeks old Alison was subject to an attack from a man using a knife whilst pushing her daughter in a pram through the dark streets of Halifax on a cold winters evening.  Alison fought off the attacker and the National press covered the story.  The matter was reported to the Police.

 

Alison suffered badly from night mares and the natural fears created from such a harrowing experience but to her credit she over came this by choosing a profession within the Police Service.  After working for 15 years within West Yorkshire Alison moved to London as a Detective Sergeant in 2004. Alison has recently being involved in the Investigations of the terrorist attacks in London performing the role of the Acting Detective Inspector.
