The song "Perfection" begins the book with the struggle to attain just that – perfection. "I Do Not Want to Be", "Once in a While", and "Ain't You Got Something To Do" add to the Christian edge! At the opposite end of the spectrum, "There Was Beer in the Backseat", "A mission from, God", and "Drunk" tell tales of light hearted debauchery.

The poem "With Me" tells of complete togetherness and "The Voice" talks of how it feels when love calls! "My Baby" and "That is What I Said" tell of how not to act in a love relationship! "Sitting Fishing" and "The River Trip" tell tales of fishing along the Missouri. "You Made the Baby Cry" lets us know some of the reasons the baby might cry if, one parent decides to leave. "Ain't It A Shame" deals with some disgraceful things that can happen. "Nuts" is a poem that deals with the frustrations of being locked away, and "War Games" deals with the feelings one might have when a war breaks out and how he might feel afterwards!

I have been writing for eighteen years. I have camped on the Missouri alone for fifty-eight days and have been to Mexico. I graduated from Boystown in 1968. I live in a house with no heat, no lights, and no running water. I caught a lot of fish and have hunted extensively.

There Was Beer In , The Back Seat
Part One

There , was beer in , the back seat !
There , was whisky up , in , the front !
We had everything we needed , everything you would want !
We said " Honest Officer , this is not a crime !
We are just out to , have a real , good , time !
He said , there , is no , way , that , you will make bail ,
and ; you will be sitting for , a long , time , in , jail !
Well , there is not any one that , you can trust ,
and ; the cop said , baby , this , is a bust !
So ... off we went ,
There , has been time , better spent !
That , is the way the story goes !
Now , every one knows
about , the beer in , the car !
We should have stayed at , the bar !
We should have stayed at , the gosh darn bar !
With , that , cop on , our trail , we did not go too far !
We did not go too gosh darn far !
A little later , on , there , were girls on , the hood ,
and ; boy , those , girls were really , looking , good !
The guys said , hey , we are almost , out of , beer !
I said , do not worry , there is a liquor store near ,
but ; darn , here came that , cop again !
Yeah , he was talking to , us when ,
he said , " pour them out , men "
I said , " Come on , guys , the party is at , my , place "
I had to , say that , just to , save face !
Well , we are always , out , to , have a little , bit of , fun ,
and ; we hate the fact that , the bars close at , one !
Because , we are still drinking , we are not done !
Yeah , we are always , looking for , some fun around , here ,
and ; most of , the time it , goes good with , more , beer !

Beer In The Back Seat
Part Two

So ... the girls were in , the back seat !
The men were in , the front !
We were listening to , the back beat !
We asked the girls , what , do you want ?
We said , maybe , we are commiting a crime ,
but ; we are still having a pretty , good , time !
I said , come on , guys lets us get ourselves , some , tail ,
but ; being that , drunk , you can not go at , it , hammer and ; nail !
So ... off we went !
All our money spent ,
but ; those girls were doing what , they , could ,
to make all of , us , guys feel , real good !
Well , the liquor store was near !
We bought some , whisky , we bought some , beer ,
and ; no , we were not done ,
when , the bar closed at , one !
We were trying to make the girls feel , good , too !
I looked up , from , kissing it , was a quarter until , two !
Well three cases of , beer served us well ,
and ; as , for , that , cop we told him to , go to , hell !
