This book is one of the few books on the market that explains the bullet flight from chamber to target in simple, easy terms and explains how to be a better shooter. Ballistics can be a tough subject for persons not trained in ballistic science. Most rifle sportsmen and hunters have interest in improving their shooting accuracy, but don’t want to read all those technical manuals. This handbook explains in enough detail the basic principles of marksmanship and the forces in nature affecting bullet flight so the reader can improve his shooting without investing a lot of time reading.

Luther Johnson began learning about guns around age 10 while hunting rabbits with his father in their home state of Kentucky. After completing high school, Luther joined the Army and graduated from the US Army Field Artillery School at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. There he was taught basic ballistics and rifle Marksmanship. During his seven-year stretch in the Army he taught rifle marksmanship both in the classroom and in the field. He also commanded several heavy artillery companies in the United States and Southeast Asia. After leaving the military service, he re-joined the hunting sport and became interested in deer hunting and the sporting rifle. Today, rifle marksmanship is a hobby and great pastime for him. He currently resides in the state of South Carolina, which offers plenty of opportunities for varmint hunting and one has one of the longest deer seasons in the United States.
Whitetail deer hunting is one of the most popular hunting sports in the United States. Deer are plentiful and have been for the past 20 years. In fact, a lot of rabbit and quail hunters have switched over to deer hunting in recent years because small game are struggling to survive due to habitat destruction and heavy predation. On the other hand, deer can be found in every patch of woods around. Despite wildlife departments’ efforts to contain the population, deer continue to thrive and multiple.
The basic strategy behind rifle marksmanship is to address all the things that could affect your bullet flight before you begin to hunt. Things like ammunition lots, barrel heat, barrel and chamber cleanliness, ballistic zero, wind, maximum effective ranges, free floating barrel, bullet weight, caliber, scope mounting, etc are some of the things that can affect the accuracy of your rifle. The idea is to ensure your shooting system is free of flaws and inconsistencies before you encounter a live target. This will give you the confidence needed when the live action begins. I will address these things in later sections of this book.
