About the Book

Much like a canvas to an artist, a blank sheet of paper to a writer represents the opportunity to express feelings and emotions that would otherwise remain repressed. This book is an exercise in catharsis, for it is a release of all the negative and positive that lies inside the mind, body, and spirit of a human being. This compilation of poetry represents our hearts and souls through writing, no longer willing to remain silent. The questions, suggestions, accusations, opinions, and judgments made may be conflicting at times, but they are merely a reflection of the conflicting nature of our own emotions. The ability to think, feel, and express ourselves makes us unique as a species. The act of sharing your thoughts and feelings is one of trust and love and one that should not be taken lightly. By listening to the voices and screams around us we become better people, and if we become better people we will be able to empower our youth, and if we empower our youth….it is our only hope for change in the future. These are the voices and screams in our hearts and our communities; our only request is that you take the time to hear them.

About the Author

Of Mexican descent, Cesar and Eric Becerra were raised in the Salinas Valley of California in a family of farm-workers. As graduates of the University of California Santa Cruz, they have developed a social view that is distinct from the norm. Their education has given them the ability to look at situations and issues from a variety of different perspectives before making a judgment or opinion. With an inner and outward passion for community building, they have devoted their time and energy to empowering underrepresented communities. Through education, community outreach and activism they promote cultural pride, self-esteem, empathy, hope, and change.

Lost Soul

We came up together, through thick and through thin;

Stayed dry in rainy weather, although so many here sin.

The bond that we formed could never be broken;

Or so I thought then; today, the truth is not spoken.

Unspoken but understood, for things aren’t the same;

You made your decision; my fight was in vain.

I tried to steer you right, but you couldn’t see;

My words bounced off walls; I could not find the key.

Respect, you must earn it, but you’ll never know;

You see you’re blinded by power, that seed now can’t grow.

Can’t judge what you’re doing; no man can do that;

What I know is that it hurts; I miss what we once had.

And although we were close, today, for you I mourn;

From this moment forward, I alone face the storm.

Although physically present, and although you’re still breathing;

Your choice to do wrong is why to me you aren’t living.

When you forget life is priceless, and confuse wants with needs;

It’s the beginning of the end; you have clipped your true wings.
