There seems to be too much pain in the world. We're bombarded with it-in the newspapers, on radio and T.V., in movies, books and conversation. Not only that, but as we grow older, we become more and more aware that we, ourselves, are often in pain. Our plans don't work out, our relationships fall apart, our jobs don't satisfy us, our hopes and dreams keep drifting farther and farther out of reach.

Sometimes we're so overwhelmed by the enormity of all the pain - the rest of the world's and our own - that we just want to shut it out. When we can't shut it out, we want to scream, 'Somebody, do something!' The trouble is, what can be done about such a massive problem? And who is the 'somebody' who can do it?

The solution is, I think, much simpler than it seems. The main thing to understand is that dealing with the world's pain doesn't mean pulling off some grandiose scheme which will change the face of the planet overnight. And relieving your own misery and suffering doesn't require a fairy godmother or a magic lamp.

The only magic you really need is the willingness to accept the fact that you are the 'somebody' who can solve the problem. This willingness opens up for you an incredible power to change your life so that you are no longer a slave to misery and suffering, whatever forms those take for you. And as you shift your own life to become happier and more peaceful, you can't help shifting the world around you. Changes will begin to take place in your daily life and in your personal world in ways you've never even dreamed possible. The effects of that can't help rippling out to influence the greater world beyond it.

Once you set this energy in motion, it seems to take on a life of its own. This doesn't mean, of course, that you don't have to do your part, because you do. What is your part? Simply to put into practice the Six-Step method detailed in this book. This method has been tested over many years and found to work in amazing ways. The Six Steps help you reconnect to the Source of All Good, whether you call it God, Christ, Buddha, Allah, the Great Spirit, the Universe, or any other name. Practicing these Steps daily will open up that Source energy and make it consistently available to you.

You may be 'religious,' or not-it doesn't matter. You can still access this energy and receive its help, simply by practicing the Steps on a regular basis. Remember, we're talking here about spiritual help. 'Religious' and 'spiritual' are not always the same thing. You don't have to be religious to be spiritual, or to make this spiritual connection and receive the benefit from it. 'Spiritual' really means 'of the spirit,' and almost everyone agrees that there is something, some essence which is uniquely oneself, which reaches beyond the mere physical. What you call it doesn't really matter. What you do about reconnecting to it does.

You don't have to believe in the God of those around you, or the religious teachings you grew up with to be truly spiritual in your focus. I, myself, was raised in a very rigid church which spoke outwardly of God's love and caring. Yet underneath that surface was a bedrock of fear and punishment, even hatred. For many years I rebelled against such a deity and felt adrift on a sea of uncertainty and unhappiness. Only when I was introduced to the Six Steps and began to practice them, did my life shift for the better. Since then, I've realized the tremendous importance of these Steps, of how they can reconnect a person to his or her inner truth and power. I've seen the truly miraculous way they can work in the lives of those who apply them. Some people have even discovered a deeper and clearer understanding of their own religious beliefs through practicing the Steps.

The spiritual teacher who taught me these Six Steps guarantees that if you make them an active part of your life, they will work, they will transform your life. And he's right. You can test this out for yourself. All it should take is thirty days of dedicated practice. I have yet to find someone who really made a commitment to working the Steps daily for this period who did not experience results.

The discussion of the Six Steps begins in full in Chapter 3. I hope you'll also read the first and second chapters carefully, because they give you a firm foundation for understanding how and why the Steps work.

In making a commitment to practice the Six Steps for thirty days, you give yourself the opportunity to change your life in a positive way forever. You become a winner in every way, because the only thing you can possibly lose is your pain.

And you'll even be doing your part to help the world!
