About the Book

Dino has three friends that are going to college with him in the fall of 1970. Their names are Tony, Joe, and Sam. Tony and Joe are probably going to be drafted into the army in January of 1971. Dino and Sam didn't have to worry about being drafted in the army because they both had each a physical deferment. Tony wants to go into the army and fight in the Vietnam War because he believes his country is doing the right thing being involved in the War. Joe is just the opposite; he doesn't want to go in the army because he doesn't want to go to Vietnam and fight and maybe die in a war he doesn't think is right. He is thinking about going to Canada if he is drafted. Dino and Sam are planning to transfer to the University of Wisconsin in Madison in the fall of 1971 when they are sophomores. They want to transfer because the college in Madison has a good engineering program. When Dino and Sam first transfer to Madison, they don't get involved in the peace movement. But after something happens to Tony in Vietnam, Dino and Sam get involved in the peace movement in Madison.

Yelled Tony. Dino just laughed at what Tony had just said. So Dino passed the joint over to Tony. After Joe took a drag off it, he passed it to Ginger, and said to Dino, 'Dino what do think about that ass hole president Nixon traveling around the country talking about the pursuit of peace while he is sending troops into Cambodia last spring. And now Cambodia is being torn apart by civil war.' 'I know what you are trying to say, if President Nixon and his generals had kept out of Cambodia, all those people in that country wouldn't be dying for nothing.' Answered Dino. 'I don't agree with you two guys about what you're saying about President Nixon, I think he was right about sending troops into Cambodia. The North Vietnamese bases in that country and they would cross over into South Vietnam and attack American and South Vietnam troops. Then they would cross back over into Cambodia for sanctuary. The North Vietnamese have supply lines running into Cambodia and by invading Cambodia by American and South Vietnamese troops, they destroy many of the North Vietnamese supply lines and bases there. This might shorten the war over there.' Reply Tony. 'Tony, you can say what you want because you aren't one of those poor bastards that were killed going into Cambodia. Like the members of the Army and the Marines. Don't forget about those innocent people who lived in Cambodia that were killed for nothing. Most of those people over there just want to live quietly and grow old.' Reply Joe. 'You are wrong Joe because if we weren't in Southeast Asia it would fall to the communists. I hope, I get drafted in January, so I can go do my part in stopping the spread of communism!' reply Tony angrily. 'You know Tony, I think you seen too many John Wayne movies. If I get my draft notice in January, I' going to Canada to live, so I don't get killed for nothing!' came back Joe. 'All right you guys, I want you two to quit talking about polities tonight!' yelled Dino. 'We are here to have some good time with these girls and do a little partying.' Then Jane said to Tony, 'I agree a little with what you're saying Tony, but also let's not forget about those college students that were killed by the national guard troops at Kent state in 1967.' 'All right Jane, I can agree with you about what happen at Kent State was wrong when the government back the national guard men.' Reply Tony. Dino interrupted and said, 'Let's forget about that mess for now.' Then Joe said, 'I guess you are Dino we are here tonight to have some fun. I sometimes get too involved in discussions about politics. I'm sorry Tony.' Said Joe with remorse. 'That's all right O.K. Joe. We all some times say things we really don't mean. Besides you and Dino are my two best friends.' Replied Tony. So they all decided to forget about politics for the rest of the evening. And Jane took another joint from her little red box. She put it in her mouth and Dino lit for her. They were going to do some serious parting the rest of the night.
