About the Author

Justine Bass has over 10 years experience in the field of education. She has taught pre-school, K-12, and post-secondary students. She has developed several curriculums which received licensing and accredited status.

Mrs. Bass is a Certified Post-Secondary Instructor, and holds a BA degree in Management and Organizational Development. Her passion and zeal for developing career programs coupled with her love for student achievement and turning ideas into goldmines inspired her to write this textbook.

Christine Traxler received her Medical Doctorate degree from the University of Minnesota and practiced medicine for 15 years. Ms. Traxler is currently a writer/editor.

            Chapter 1:

Careers and Professional Development for

Medical Assistants

Overview of basic job specifications for professionals operating as medical assistants is provided in the introductory chapter as well as information about other medical careers found in both hospitals and clinical settings.  Educational avenues for advancement along with licensure requirements are located in this chapter as well.

 

            Chapter 2: The Respiratory System

This chapter provides cognitive explanations of the organs that make up the respiratory system; accompanied by an overview of the functionality and mechanics of those organs both separately and as an organ system.

 

            Chapter 3: Vital Signs

A functional definition of the term vital signs is relayed as well as techniques used to measure each. We will discuss how age, gender, and other factors affect these bodily indicators and the importance of reporting accurate information regarding vital signs in practical medicine.  Instruments used will be introduced here and these terms will recur throughout the remainder of the text.

 

            Chapter 4: CPR/First Aid/AED

Here we explore the basic tenets of Basic Life Support and CPR, laws regarding aiding injured or afflicted persons in a medical emergency, what articles of clothing are necessary to protect both yourself and others in such an emergency, and finally how to handle exposure to blood pathogens.
