R.T. Cain
The 1970's arrives in 'Lapley Vale' accompanied by great rejoicing and joy occasionally shaded by some heartfelt sorrow and sadness. Four delightful bouncing Babies are born in what can only be described as breath taking circumstances. Two tragic sudden deaths reveal many astonishing facts. Long kept secrets gradually unravel with stunning consequences. Natural, unspoilt, humour will provide the Readers with large doses of amusement and laughter from start to finish. The unusual reactions of some of the Locals in the face of ongoing, radical, social change help to provide a perfect platform for sweeping aside any of the Readers personal cares or woes. Perhaps they might agree that although some response to 'The Swinging Sixties' is more apparent the vast majority of the Citizens of 'Lapley Vale' , true to form, are merely 'Staggering' into the 1970's after quite happily 'Swaying' through the now legendary 1960's.

Bernie and Damien are engaged to be married. She has called for an emergency meeting at Jenny's home. Kay and Amy are also present.
Kay gets the ball rolling, "I hope this little visit is being made so that those final arrangements can be made for a little celebration to take place Bernie love...I hear congratulations are in order...Damien was telling Sam and Ricky that you are now a fully qualified Solicitor...Well done love....What a marvellous achievement...What do you say Jen?...Our clever Mate?...Eh?"
Nodding and smiling Jenny agrees. Bernie smiled but before she could politely respond she broke down despite her best afforts to desperately hide her distress from them all, especially from little Amy.
Jenny reacted without hestitation to comfort her friend by affectionately placing her arm around her now heaving shoulders, "There...There Bernie love...Whatever is wrong?...Have we upset you in some way? Please sit down and tell us what on earth is causing you to be so very upset."
The distraught woman managed to control herself sufficiently enough to be able to speak, "Jen....Kay..You haven't done anything...It's me...And Damien...Oh God... I don't know how to explain this to you...Well...I've been stupid enough to allow myself to fall pregnant."
The effort involved in relating her news had caused Bernie to commence weeping uncontrollably. Jenny loked completely unfazed as did Kay. They both positively stated in unison, "Is that all?"
Jenny continued, "Thank God that's all...I was getting worried there was something really seriously wrong for a minute or two."
Bernie was sufficiently stunned by their completely unexpected reactions that she ceased her weeping forthwith. Jenny cuddled her friend and smiled as she felt obliged to explain their reactions and subsequent conduct. "Bernie love...You have just well and truely joined our Gang in every sense of the word...You might not be aware of the fact that Ricky and I found ourselves in exactly the same state you currently find yourselves in...Believe me Bernie...This is nothing to be so upset about...You are properly engaged to be married...You're entitled to a little practice in the long run up to your wedding day...Good grief love....I thought...Well I don't want to even think about what I thought when I saw you bursting into tears."
The true comfort enjoyed through genuine friendship shines through. Just wait until you read about what happed next.
