How do you begin a book about the God of the universe? Why would anyone even try? To those who believe in him there's no need for more printed matter to prove Him, and to those who don't believe, no amount of written material will convince them of who He is. For any who aren't sure, and who would like to believe, or need to believe in Him it's worth writing about His revelations to me. Of course He's told us who He is in His inspired Word, the Bible, but how do you begin to find what you need in a "book" that spans centuries? Since He is pure spirit, how can we begin to know Him and come to love Him? This was St. Augustine's famous question. "How do we love someone we don't know, and how do we get to know someone we don't love?" God does give us some understanding in the Bible. We are told that Jesus is His son, that Jesus is "in the Father" and the Father is "in Him." We are told that "He and the Father" are one and that when we have seen Jesus, we have seen the Father. Jesus tells us, that He will send His Spirit as a comforter and witness and we're told that when we are "saved, " His Spirit abides in us. We're told that when we are baptized by Jesus with His Holy Spirit we have a special unity with Him, and that we can be "led" by His Spirit, be "full" or "penetrated" by His Spirit, be "in the power" of His Spirit and "anointed" by His Spirit. We are also told that His sheep hear His voice. So it seems that if we are His sheep, and He is within us by His spirit, then we should hear His voice rising up from within us! I believe this and I believe I experience this on a regular basis. In this book I testify to you about the wonderful things He has said and done in my life. The word "testify" in the Bible comes from the Greek and literally translates to "give evidence." So this book, such as it is, is my testimony, the evidence I give about who my God is. It is not open to argument or debate because it is not a theological paper. It is something personal between God and me. I set it forth as a testimony of things God has done and said in my life. Many of these are spectacular, so some friends and other excited believers have told me I should share them with others, who may want to or need to hear them. I had my doubts about recording everything, but then God gave me the title of the book and the call to begin.
I am a medical doctor, licensed and in good standing, and I claim to be a credible "evidence giver." The book consists of a series of narratives about personal supernatural experiences as well as some supernatural events involving others. There are stories of prophecies I have lived to see come to pass, and of prayers that have been answered involving others and myself. These are set forth in no special order; however, as much as possible, there is an intent to be chronological. Some testimonies are short; others are long. You may begin reading anywhere and skip about, as you like.
What went on before I became saved is not really significant, but here is a brief sketch. I was born and raised in an Italian Roman Catholic home, and I hold two degrees from a Jesuit University including an M.D. degree. I married and fathered seven children, but was divorced after 18 years. My second marriage will reach 25 years in a few months as of this writing. (2001) I practiced Obstetrics, Gynecology and Infertility Microsurgery over a 30-year period; retiring in January of 1998. I held every position of leadership possible in my hospital, and I held the highest office in the N.J. State OB-Gyn Society. There are other credentials, but this is enough to establish my credibility. I still hold a valid medical license in the state of Maine.
Next, a young woman came out on the stage and began to tell her story. It seemed that she had been diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer. Her doctors worked at my own hospital and I knew them. Because she was losing blood and was literally dying, she was transferred to a major New York City cancer hospital. Her church began praying for her with a special all night vigil and she testified that during the night, she felt a heat in her chest, a new strength in her body and that she knew she had been healed. Her blood count immediately returned to normal, she did not take prescribed transfusions, and she was sent home the next morning. Now here she was, in front of me, telling this impossible story. I remember leaning over to my wife and saying, "Yeah? Show me the X-rays!"
Next, the Catholic priest who was hosting the meeting spoke of his sadness because we could not all share the Eucharist due to "doctrinal differences." However, he said, "All Christians can share something." He then proceeded to wash the feet of the other pastors. Everyone began crying and, I knew something was happening. I could feel it, but I didn’t understand it at all. Anyhow, at the altar invitation, I went foreword to receive Jesus as my personal Savior. I had always believed I was saved since "I was Catholic," but after this, I wasn’t so sure anymore, especially after hearing that guy in the beginning say all those wonderful things to Jesus. Unfortunately, my "going foreword" ended up being just an intellectual exercise and, I regret to say, a shallow spiritual event – but only for a season.
God is so wonderful. He really knows how to get your attention. He knows how to come to you, wherever you are, in a "customized" way. He weans you to understand that it is He who seeks your attention. He does it so you can know that it is He who is talking to us. Thank you Jesus!
Now here comes the "clincher." Several days after I went foreword, Diane and I went out to dinner with the Chief of Radiology from my own hospital and we were sitting in a Portuguese restaurant in Newark, New Jersey. He leaned over the table and said, "Mike, the strangest thing happened to me this past week." You guessed it. He proceeded to tell me the story of a young woman with inoperable lung cancer who was sent to New York and came home healed after receiving no treatment. She came to my to friend’s X-ray department in our hospital for follow up films, and the tumors were gone! This news came from the physician who made the diagnosis from the X-rays in the first place. All the films were checked and rechecked for labeling and other possible explanations for the apparent error, but there was no natural explanation. The tumor was gone, and this was the same woman’s body with and then without the tumor. There was no doubt. God went beyond showing me the X-rays. He gave me the testimony of a dumbfounded, non-Christian radiologist to provide me with the proof for the miracle.
