When You Were Wee

Every morning we were wakened by the radio exercises. It seemed that in every neighbourhood throughout the country and outside many factories people would be doing their warm ups for the day.

A cheerful lady’s voice would be blaring out the instructions to lively piano playing.

Outside our window, down in front of the hospital entrance, there was a large square and here our neighbours would gather, all lined up nice and straight, and as soon as the radio started – I think it was at nine o’clock – everyone was doing their daily exercises – arms up, arms down, legs out, legs in and so on.

It was quite a sight to see, especially in the winter, with the early morning sunshine and people’s breath clearly visible against the cold air, and all around us those snow covered mountains that made us feel so  safe and secure.
