As they made their way to the coach, there came the sound of breaking glass. They spun round just in time to see a lit oil lamp falling from one of the now broken windows.
Mathew saw the answer to his earlier question. The lamp hit the floor and shattered, spreading oil onto the straw laden floor, which quickly caught light.
They began to stamp out the flames, but the lamp was followed by others. In a matter of seconds, the floor was ablaze and the flames were licking up the wooden walls, by now too intense to be stamped out. John and Mathew ran back to the doors, and pushed but they refused to open. They were trapped.
The windows were a possible means of escape, but without a ladder, it was impossible to climb up to them. Looking around, they saw no signs of a ladder or anything else they could climb. Likewise there was nothing they could use for a battering ram on the doors. Already they were coughing and their eyes were smarting from the smoke.
They were caught in a carefully planned trap.

About the Book
When John Mayfield came to Warwick in 1840, to take command of the new police force, he expected to encounter problems, but not from some of his own men; the influential James Cooper and the mysterious Major Charles Pearson. About the Author
Graham Sutherland is a retired police officer, and currently the Beadle and Town Crier of Warwick; also a Blue Badge Tourist Guide for the Heart of England. He is married with three adult daughters. Always a keen historian, he was a founder member of the Warwickshire Constabulary History Society, with a special interest in 19th Century policing.
Already the author of numerous non-fiction pubications, mainly to do with Warwickshire, policing and some of the more infamous crimes in English criminal history, Mayfield is his first venture into fiction, and part 1 of a trilogy, centered around John Mayfield.
