It was the last day of September. To most people it was a day like any other but, to the creatures of Bluebell Wood, it would mean their life, for the next few months, was about to change and there was nothing they could do about it! "Enjoy it while you can” shouted Phelix to his sister Phlora, “we will have to keep our heads down soon!”. The Pheasant family had been enjoying a wonderful Autumn day, the warmth of the sun on their wings as they glided in the sky over Bluebell Woods, rich pickings of insects, nuts and bugs to eat on the wood floor below. "Remind me again, Phelix” shouted Phlora as she swooped down to rest on the ground awhile. “Well” said Phelix, “it's September now and Dad says tomorrow it will be the First day of October, the start of the Shooting Season! Oh look out, here comes Dad now, he can tell you all about it himself!”. With a majestic sweep of outstretched wings, Phelix and Phlora's grand old father, Phreddie, swooped past playfully, making a near miss dive at his children on the soft woodland ground below. “Hey watch out Dad” said Phlora, “you nearly took my head off!”. When Phreddie had landed on the soft fallen leaves laying on the ground Phelix ran over and asked him to tell Phlora and himself the story about the Shooting Season again.

About the Book
Phelix and Phlora considered themselves to be two of the luckiest pheasants in the world! They lived in the beautiful setting of Bluebell Wood and had lots of friends to fly and play with everyday. There were all the animals in the Woods, such as the owls, badgers and rabbits and all then there were all the animals on the lake, the swans, ducks and otters. It was the last day of September and Phelix and Phlora were enjoying a late summer fly and fun and games with their friends when Phelix remembered that tomorrow their whole world would come tumbling down! Phreddie, their father, had often told them the story about the First day of October, the start of the pheasant shooting season! From tomorrow their very lives would be in danger! How would Phelix and Phlora and all their friends escape being shot, would they manage to survive? Would they escape the guns and dogs when the family by the lake came to shoot in Bluebell? They would need to be very clever to escape with their lives once the First day of October arrived!
About the Author
Annabel Harris lives in a small village in Norfolk, England, and is married to David and has two boys, Jonathan and Edward. She enjoys all kinds of country pursuits, making use of the countryside around her for walking, fishing, cycling and game shooting. There is a pretty bluebell wood at the end of her garden and lakes abundant with wildlife. Using her imagination, she has created a story of pure fiction which she does not pretend to be a true recreation of game shooting!
