“There were auditory phenomena, such as footsteps, mysterious beeping noises, and a sound that Smith likened to that of a post being repeatedly hammered into the ground. The latter manifestation apparently began sometime in 1979 and continued, intermittently, until August 1980. The sound seemed to originate near an irrigation ditch behind the house, and appeared to come from above the ground. It would go on for about 15-20 minutes, stop for a while, and then resume. It would start in the early evening and sometimes continue through the night. The moment a family member walked around the house to investigate its source, it would stop. But it would resume when the person had returned to the house. “Mysterious voices were sometimes heard. For example, Long relates that Smith woke one night to hear a very clear, male voice. Although it was seemingly coming from outside a window next to his wife’s side of the bed, it described the whereabouts of the people in the house as if the speaker were inside the house and looking down. Smith woke his wife and asked, “Did you hear that voice?” But then it stopped. Smith went to the bathroom and then returned to bed. He was about to fall asleep when he heard the voice again, apparently coming from next to a side door of the house. This time, his wife heard it as well, but it stopped as soon as Smith got out of bed to investigate. Looking out to the yard, he saw that his two guard dogs (German shepherds) were asleep. “On the evening of 8th May 1976, Smith’s daughter was awoken by what seemed to be a thud against the side of the house, outside her room. Seconds later, she heard the sound of breaking glass. But no broken glass or out-of-place item was found the next morning, although some unusual markings were noticed in the dust on two cars parked side-by-side near the house.”
