About the Book

An old man approaching the end of his long journey retires to the Italian countryside where he spent most of his first ten years before and throughout World War II. He sets out to rediscover his boyhood there. He also rethinks major events of those times as perceived with his later learning. That offers him further insight on how his life evolved elsewhere as well on why his motherland’s enviable wealth of creativity and natural and historical beauty is still marred by persistently fractured politics.

About the Author

Luciano Manara, Italian, born in 1935, earned his MD degree as a summa cum laude at Milan University, did his military service in the Italian Medical Corps, and went on to a lifelong international research career, first as a bench scientist, later with managerial responsibilities. His endeavors earned him several domestic and foreign awards. He also did some teaching and wrote scientific papers and books and articles for the lay press (scientific dissemination). Since his retirement to his native countryside in 2005, he has dedicated himself to gardening, cultivating fruit trees and vegetables.
