How to Test the Spirits

Seductive spirits and doctrines of demons are technical subjects. Paul’s letter to Timothy gives us insight about them in the days we are living in, as well as their eschatological implications. Seductive spirits and doctrines of demons go hand in hand with false doctrines and worldliness. Seductive spirit(s) has nothing to do with sexual behavior. Nor has it anything to do with spiritual husbands or spiritual wives in your dreams. It has nothing to do with demonization. It is about teachings spawned by demons (seducing spirits) through false teachers, preachers, or prophets in the pulpits. Such false teachers are conduit pipes without fresh living water, autumn trees without fruit. They propagate false doctrines contrary to God’s truth. Paul, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, mentions the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth in 1 Timothy 3:15. In verse 16, he says, Christ the mystery of godliness—God incarnate. As Paul has spoken of the truth in the church and the truth in Christ, he thinks immediately of the attack against that truth by Satan, the master of the clever twist of the truth. Now, let us look intently at 1 Timothy 4:1. It reads, “The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.” The Holy Spirit links things taught by demons with demonism as their source, and speaks clearly and emphatically of the last days and apostates within the church. Men will abandon the faith and listen to lying spirits. Men will become captives of the doctrines of demons or things taught by demons. This verse talks about a very specific group of malevolent forces that have managed to find some willing, so-called men of God without any consciences. These are people with unbelieving hearts who are tired of hearing the truth. They embrace the Bible plus “the spirits of the shrines.” They are false shepherds who “eat the meat of the choice sheep, tearing off their hoofs in pieces” (Zech. 11:16). They view their members as estates to be farmed for their own profit.

Today, many churches have become personal businesses for inheritance wealth and franchises for theological opportunism, resulting in a weak doctrinal foundation, spiritual retardation, lack of biblical discernment, humanism, deism, doctrines of demons, and worldliness—the conspicuous display of wealth. Whole denominations, even many where the gospel was once proclaimed clearly, have been left spiritually bankrupt because doctrines of demons and unbeliefs were tolerated. So-called men of God have become fame-obsessed celebrities, eager to please their congregations with human wisdom. There is a spirit behind every teaching. Why do people listen to irresponsible teaching that is spawned by seductive spirits? How to Test the Spirits and Understanding Seducing Spirits and Doctrines of Demons may be taken as a testament to that effect. This is clearly a “last days” occurrence within the church. It is every believer’s solemn duty to resist every attack on the truth by the master of the clever twist of the gospel, the Adversary; to abhor the very thought of falsehood; and to test the spirits to see whether they are from God.
