Stanley Grier Bonner was truly a man of the old South. Born in 1937, he spent most of his life in rural Wilcox County in the Black Belt of south Alabama. This was the setting for the majority of the stories he recorded in Houses and Homes. His purpose in writing this book was to give a glimpse to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of life in the South of his boyhood. For a large part of his adult life he farmed land that had been in his family for four generations. His writing reveals his upbringing in a family grounded in strong Christian faith. His spiritual roots were, indeed, deep and lasting. For many years he was a dedicated member of the Alabama Army National Guard and retired from the US Army Reserve as a Lieutenant Colonel. On March 7, 2004, after a long battle with cancer, the Lord called him to come home and be with Him. He is a man greatly missed by family and friends!
