“See, there was a guy down in Tallahassee who died recently. Someone by the name of Esposito. Mike was his first name. He worked for-”
“City Hall, Audit office, yeah, I heard of that,” Jason interrupted. “They say he was killed in a car accident.”
“Your brother was convinced otherwise. He believed he was murdered.”
“And who would have killed him?” Jason asked.
“Probably the same people who killed your brother.
“Thing is,” Dale continued. “Your brother started making some contacts inside the city hall and what he found was dynamite.” He then took another sip.
“See, there are a lot of British companies that serviced South Africa and were engaged in the defense business in the US as well. One of them is called DARDAN.”
“Yeah, I found the name in my brother's office,” Jason interrupted once again.
“DARDAN is a Defense Electronics Firm. They decided to settle in Tallahassee so the city was really glad to have the Brits in partnership with the US ARMY choosing such a location. They wanted to manufacture military radios for the US Army. That was the official deal.”
“So what happened?” Jason asked, getting very interested.
“Well, Tallahassee offered a free and new Industrial park as well as $4 million in tax subsidies. Thing is, DARDAN found out that Tallahassee had passed a state law, making it illegal to the state of Florida to put money in any company doing business with South Africa. Y' know, because all of that anti-apartheid feelings.”
“You want more coffee?” Jason interrupted while filling up his cup.
“No thanks. Still got some.”
“Anyway,” Dale continued. “Mike Esposito was the city auditor and was ordered by the city commission to investigate. The commission had some bad feelings about it and they said that the deal will no longer exist if DARDAN has lied.”
“So?”
“So Esposito contacted the foreign commercial service of the Department of Commerce who sent an official to Johannesburg. When the official arrived, he found a fenced villa only. And that was the official address of Dardan in South Africa. In other words, Dardan was feeding wrong or misleading information to the city hall.”
“So they closed the deal?” Jason asked.
“Not quite,” Dale replied. “At that point, the deal was in jeopardy, yes. Thing is, Defense Minister of England raised the problem with the pentagon officials who were really anxious to see the deal going through. The guys in the pentagon reported the problem to the Senate, and especially Senator Kociensky, a powerful man, to say. Meanwhile, the Florida investigators, led by Esposito had found that DARDAN's parent company is QOOR Industries Ltd and those had received substantial loans from South Africa. Now QOOR was owned by the British government but with a 49% share by the South Africans. Dig it?”
“Yeah, I dig”, Jason answered.
“It's gets even better. See, a strange metamorphosis happened then. The 49% share of South Africa was turned over ANTAK which is based in Switzerland, Netherlands and South Africa. ANTAK after that emerged as an American Multinational based in the US.
“On the other hand,” Dale went on and on. “QOOR became QOOR/ELR Ltd, jointly owned by QOOR and ANTAK.”
“Boy, it's complicated.”
Dale grinned then continued.
“See, QOOR was an Iron and Steel Corporation in the beginning. It's funny to see that after all that change, an American company started shipping south-African steel to England. In any event, meetings were still held in the US, on paper only, but everything was done in South-Africa in reality. The main thing is that the south-African ownership was erased. And that's why your brother went down recently. He wanted to interview some of the people down there.”
“And they killed him for that? You think?”
“Well not necessarily. After all these changes, DARDAN hired the son of senator Kociensky to lobby on its behalf. His son was working at the City Hall then. It was an intelligent move from them. Soon after, there was a vote which was approved by a 3 to 2 win, thanks to the son. The commission had to approve. They had no choice.”
“This is big shit. So why would they have killed my brother?”
“Well, recently, Esposito, the auditor, started to investigate a little more. I guess he found out a little more than he should have, especially the recruiting of the son of the senator by Dardan. And that's what got him killed I presume. Your brother knew enough and so they eliminated him as well.”
