Marrying right out of college and never really having the chance to experience life as a single woman, Cleopatra Beavers always wondered if she was missing something. Her marriage to Michael Beavers was necessary because of an unexpected pregnancy and Cleo fell into a lifestyle of work, family, friends and more work without having any flair in her life.
While attending one of the local charity events in Memphis, Cleopatra catches the eye of the most eligible bachelor in the city. Leonard Wilkins was known for his business savvy and was the most sought after architect in his field. He had been divorced for years and was known by most as a womanizer who wooed two and three women at a time. His initial contact with Cleo proves to be a disaster and he is quickly dismissed by her as being a silly man. However, Leonard was not one to take rejection easily and the mere fact that Cleo showed no interest in him made Leonard want to get as close to her as he could. His plotting to plant himself in her life started that night on his way home from the party.
For weeks after their encounter, Leonard anonymously sends flowers and gifts to Cleopatra and finally he shows up during her lunch hour at her favorite restaurant. After much coaxing she agrees to talk with him and a friendship starts. When Leonard grabs her and kisses her during one of their lunch dates Cleoparta decides the friendship has to end.
By putting forth much effort Cleopatra becomes closer to her husband only to find out that he has been having affairs with other women for a long period of time. Cleopatra's goes through drastic changes in her marriage and Leonard makes sure that he keeps an eye on her. He has decided when the time is right, he will step up and do whatever is necessary to be near her. He also realizes that he must be a better man to prove to Cleopatra that he really has changed.
The drama that occurs during Cleo's discovery of the other women places her right back in the presence of Leonard Wilkins. She soon discovers that sometimes the grass is greener on the other side as she becomes confident and happy with her new attitude.
