About the Book

Philip McGregor is so fat that everyone either stares or sniggers as he passes by. At school he goes by the name of Porky. But one day he collapses in the school canteen and is rushed to hospital. In his despair Porky doesn’t realise that this marks the start of a new life in which he will fight back instead of sink. He’s drawn to the hospital garden where a sunflower beckons him to come close and listen because it has a secret to impart to him. A secret that will empower and lead him to seven other teenagers from different continents who are each escaping their own conflicts. Troubles caused by a dangerous lack of food security, which threaten the future of the Earth. The kids are unexpectedly entrusted with secrets, communicated magically by the Earth itself – by plants, animals and birds. As Keepers they are led to make incredible, yet precarious, journeys - still unaware of where they must go. But the Food Masters are hot on their heels, ready to kill to keep those secrets hidden…

About the Author

Mairi McLellan has always loved telling stories; even at the age of five she was known for entertaining adult gatherings with her long made-up epics. Mairi taught English Literature and Drama to all age groups for over fifteen years. To encourage a love of reading she would often attempt to dramatise stories in class. Shadi Hamadeh is the director of the Environmental and Sustainable Development Unit at the American University of Beirut. He works on sustainable food systems and his major challenge is to reconcile the chaos theory with the bitter realities of food security in the Middle East and North Africa region. Shadi Hamadeh and Mairi have collaborated before: Shadi asked her to bring ‘El Harid’, a little catus plant alive. He was to become the narrating voice in his book, ‘The Spirit of the Drylands’, which addressed development and sustainability in the Bekaa Valley, Lebanon. Recently, Shadi and Mairi have come together again to wage Food Wars. Shadi’s expertise and imagination as well as Mairi’s creative flair have combined to produce an explosive concoction of frightening facts and magical adventure. Mairi currently lives in her hometown in Renfrewshire, Scotland and Shadi resides in Beirut, Lebanon.
