One morning, Momma got up early and checked my crib as she always did. I was lying on my stomach but my leg with the cast was sticking up from the knee. She gently turned me over onto my back. I had fallen asleep with my pacifier in my mouth. As she removed the pacifier, I began to stare and she noticed that around my lips was a light blue discoloration. She called my name and gently shook me. I did not respond. She picked me up and yelled for my brother. As she started down the stairway, she told him to call Grandma Jean and tell her to come quickly Laura was having trouble breathing. My brother went to the phone and Momma began blowing gently in my mouth. She continued to try and rouse me. I took one or two breaths and then stopped. She took the phone from my brother and told Grandma Jean that I was not breathing and had turned blue around my mouth.

About the Book
This book is about my daughter, Laura. She was born six weeks premature during a thunderstorm that caused the hospital electricity to go out for several minutes. The incubator that she was sleeping in turned off. She went without oxygen and her body temperature dropped below normal before the nurse attendant noticed. Because of this, her brain went without oxygen for a while. Later her condition was labeled Cerebral Palsy. She also developed a seizure disorder. Laura doesn’t walk, talk, feed or toilet herself. In spite of this she is very communicative and a delightful person. There have been disappointments, happiness, failures, successes, heart aches and fulfilled and unfulfilled dreams. Her life hasn’t been easy but with faith and perseverance, she continues to press forward. Her story is an enjoyable read. You will identify with some of it, laugh and cry, but hopefully you will feel good and be inspired by reading this book.
About the Author
Paula Jean Hight-Sullins is the author of three poetry books, two Junior High/High School level books, and one Early Elementary level book. An Angel in the House is a biography written from the perspective of her mentally and physically handicapped daughter. “This book was written with love and admiration. It is about the life of my sweet, angel on earth, my daughter, Laura.”
