“Lola says her grandpa has a pumpkin tree,” Alex said. “That’s ridiculous. Pumpkins grow on the ground. Everybody knows that.” Lola looked up at her teacher, then at the children. She blinked quickly, swallowed hard, and mumbled, “Grandpa’s pumpkins grow on a tree.” Pointing to the classroom, Miss Lee told everyone, “our extra recess is over.”

No one believed Lola. “I help him grow the tree, so I should know!” she declared. But how was she to prove it? With some struggle, she did come up with proof and soon had her classmates chanting, “A pumpkin tree! A pumpkin tree!”
About the Author
As a classroom teacher, Gayanne’s favorite subject was writing. She came to learn, though, that while English was the ‘engine’ of writing, other subjects - Social Studies, Science, and even Math - also offered wonderful opportunities for her students to share their understandings, ideas, and creative thoughts through concrete, 3-dimensional experiences, as well as through writing. Eventually she was given a chance to express a ‘concrete, 3-dimensional experience’ through writing - how a pumpkin tree came to grow in her backyard.
