While serving as the High School Sr. Boys Basketball Coach, I decided to attend a 5th grade Boys Basketball game. I would get the opportunity to experience the future talent I would get in Jr.High in a couple of years. After arriving at the Ballgame at 9:00a.m. on a Saturday morning, I was notified the Bookkeeper and the Clock person did not show up for their duties. I agreed to fill both positions as it was just a 5th grade game and one person could handle both the Clock and Book. During the game a little Boy comes to the table to check in for the game. This was his first game and he was very nervous and not sure how to even check in the game. I could tell by looking at his body language, he was scared to death at the thought of entering the game. He was dressed in his team's attire which was a gray T-Shirt with only a number on the back of the shirt and nothing on the front. As he faced me, he said in a very shaky and timid voice, “I want to go in the ballgame". Instead of asking him to turn around, I ask "What is your number"? At that point the young Boy grabbed his head with both hands, eyes shut, and a grimace on his face as he was in deep thought trying desperately to remember his number. After much thought he responded in a loud voice "877-5462". Not wanting to embarrass him, I ask him to take a seat and I would get him in the game on the first opportunity. As he took a seat in front of me I recorded his jersey number in the Scorebook. I would imagine he told his Mom and Dad about having to give his phone number in order to play in the game.

There are numerous educators that would admit they need more knowledge in their specific area or product. Sometimes, there are opportunities for educators to gain knowledge, but just not in their area of expertise. There is also a strong belief that two different curriculums are present in all educational institutions. The two that exist for educators are a planned curriculum and an unplanned curriculum. All names and locations used in each story are fictitious. As you read this book of true educational experiences, I hope you will see and agree that the unplanned curriculum is needed for a balance of the educational life. We could not enjoy a high quality of school life without the laughter of educators and students. Schools are a serious experience for all involved in the educational process. The childhood years are an experience that we all can relate to and have in common. People need humor and laughter to balance the serious experience of education. Children often leave us with opportunities to laugh and enjoy life at its fullest potential. Some of the most successful television shows have centered on what children say and do. I am in hopes that this collection of true human experiences will add to your memories and cause much laughter and delight from the reading of this material.
About the Author
Jim Roe is a retired Public School Superintendent who has 32 years’ experience in Education. He served as Basketball Coach for 15 years, High School Principal for 4 years, and as Superintendent for his last 13 years. Jim is a past member of the Missouri Association of School Administrators, Missouri Association of Rural Education, and the Missouri State High School Activities Association where he also served as President. Over the years Roe has been a guest speaker for different schools and has performed many comedy sketches for a number of school events and organizations. Roe is a story teller and has shared his humorous recollections with many people. Jim has often been asked the same question, “Why don’t you write a book”? Some of this material in this book represents the humorous stories that he has always loved to share. The contributors have shared some humorous stories about their experience in Education.
