My Road to Success by Sheila Steptoe

Over the past eight weeks, my book marketing journey has been full of fun, excitement, laughs, nerve-racking moments, pleasure and wonderful responses. Let me tell you about my experience.

It is difficult to describe the feeling I had when I finally held in my hands the culmination of so much effort. I realized I had to take the plunge and organize the publicity otherwise my book would be lost on the bookshelves. And who better to do it than myself?

I launched my book at the Mind, Body, Soul Exhibition in Brentwood, Essex. My appearance resulted in two big contracts to do workshops in conjunction with my book. I did a talk which was standing room only, and they were queuing for my book! I sold 40 signed copies at my first launch! The biggest surprise was being asked to write a regular column for a local magazine. I also handed out over 400 promotional bookmarks with my book details as give aways, as people did not always have time to stop.

Later, I took time to write a powerful 'pitch' letter and a one-page press release. I telephoned eight local media companies and five called me back. The first was my local BBC Radio station. They asked me to come in for a live chat. I felt sick with excitement. Four days later, there I was happily chatting to a lovely lady and a few thousand listeners! Three local newspapers have also contacted me and are doing articles on my book.

Recently, I walked into my local Ottakar’s Bookstore and asked to schedule a book signing. We arranged a date, and they are even doing the promotions for me. But what is even more rewarding is seeing my name, my books, and my posters in their shop window display.

In between all of this, I decided to network with friends and colleagues. Now, my book is circulating around Channel 4 TV along with a handful of promotional bookmarks, and I may appear on a new television show next year!

My efforts so far have been successful. I always ask with enthusiasm and a smile, and I make sure to write a thank you letter afterward. I have learnt that with a little bit of luck and some hard work, anything is possible. Promoting my book has been so exciting and worth every bit of time and effort I have put in. This is only just the start!
