Having published many academic works and training manuals I decided to write a work of fiction. Having undertaken a great deal of research into my options for publishing a fictional work I decided to work with Author House.

Why do you write?

I write as part of my work but for many years I have been encouraged to write a fictional story and finally I decided to do this. It turned out to be one of the most enjoyable and rewarding things that I have ever done. The areas of research that I had to become involved with were fascinating. I felt quite lost when the book was finished and then I realised that the hard work was yet to begin in relation to preparing for publication. Hard work though it was, it was immensely satisfying.

Inspiration for the Book

There are many things that happen in life and we can use these experiences to help others or to provide entertainment. Working in a university people often used to comment on the complete lack of understanding of the significance of the administration services in a university. It was mentioned that even fictional stories focus on academia. Then came the challenge to write a work of fiction based on university administration.

Work became a different place as we chatted about plots and the possible outcomes. Different duties took on a whole new meaning and made the workplace a different environment for many people. I have a hardback copy of the book signed by those people who inspired me and a party is planned to celebrate, discuss and to plan a strategy for marketing.

The Next Step

The book was in my hand and this resulted in mixed feelings - a great sense of achievement and the fear of what will people think. Be prepared as it is impossible to please all of the people but if they are talking about the book then you really have achieved something as it has promoted thought and discussion.

Writing my first work of fiction has been a learning experience. Writing as part of a job is totally different from writing fiction and as with everything we get better with practice. Creative writing is fulfilling, it is an escape and it is wonderful to enable characters to do what you want them too. When thinking about writing your world takes on a whole new perspective. I have received emails from many parts of this country, Spain, Greece and Ireland. I have had people asking when the next book will be available and if I have any earlier works. The one consistent comment has been that characters are so believable and that in itself is a huge reward.
