Fifty years ago people were in awe of those who achieved the rank of black belt. Those who were dedicated enough to do so were considered the elite, and for good reason. Back then nothing was given away, everything was earned. In that time the now infamous black belt meant something, but now everyone has one. Many things have contributed to the lack of quality Dan (Black Belt) holders in this day and age. Lack of knowledgeable instructors, business-oriented instructors, and unmotivated students, just to name a few. Due to the abundant quantity of unqualified black belts, we are looked down upon, so how do we bring back the views of the past? The answer is simple. We must utilize the mirror in the dojo and look to develop the self.

This piece of literature is a gateway into the mind of one who has been a student of the fighting arts for more than three decades. I have had the honor of studying classical arts as well as modern arts. I have come to realize a few things as a result of my research. The essays that I have written will act as a window into the soul of martial arts as it is taught today. About the Author
 Randy B. Haskins Sensei, Author of: INSIGHT 101, an 9th degree black belt (Kudan) in Karate, a 3rd degree black belt (Sandan) in Aiki JuJutsu and a 1st degree black belt (Shodan) in Judo has dedicated his life to the martial arts. Haskins Sensei studied under some of the very best martial arts has to offer, including William Mark Whitley Sensei (Taikido Karate), Takeshi Okamura Sensei (Aiki Jujutsu Daito Ryu), and Noriyasu Kudo Kancho (Judo & Sui Shin Ryu Karate).
