Award-winning AuthorHouse Author Myne Whitman Talks About Finding Her Niche Market, Social Media Marketing, and Supporting Fellow Nigerian Writers

Born in Enugu, Nigeria, holding a master's degree in public health research and currently residing in Seattle, Myne Whitman realised her “childhood dream of spinning stories” when she self published A Heart to Mend through AuthorHouse in December 2009.

Her debut novel met with public and critical acclaim. Four Nigerian Blog Awards and several weeks at the top of Amazon UK’s Kindle bestseller list established Whitman as one of Nigeria’s foremost and most popular contemporary fiction writers in the romance genre.

This really should come as no surprise as Whitman openly confesses to being a “great believer in love . . . lucky to meet and marry the love of my life.” When sharing her stories with readers she draws upon her real life romance and the contrast between the “drizzling winter rains” of her present home in America’s Pacific Northwest and her “dreams of the long, hot days” in her native Nigeria.

Whitman’s books do not simply entertain, they inspire. Seeing her success, fellow Nigerian writers reached out asking for help. Naija Stories was born in response. This project has created a community where Nigerian writers can connect with one another, with literary agents, with other published authors, and with the general public in order to help them realize their dreams of becoming published authors.

“It was my way of saying to Nigerian writers and other writers that you’re not alone, you just have to keep writing and one day your voice will be heard.”

Winning the Nigerian Blog Awards helped Whitman find her niche market. As a full-time blogger, she organizes blog tours for her books so her fans and followers can help to spread the word. There is a great synchronicity that occurs when promoting your work through social media. The blog promotes the books while the book promotes the blog. Whitman has found this reciprocity extremely rewarding and is “passionate about using the internet and social media to promote the book industry and reading culture in my home country.” You can follow her blog, “Myne Whitman Writes” here.

Whitman’s universal advice to any author considering self publishing is to “find out the services being offered and use only what they can afford and hope to recover within a realistic time frame.” She describes working with AuthorHouse as a “smooth experience.”

“Everything was explained to me and the work was finished in the given time.”
